The additional term ‘Garantita’ is used when a wine meets all the requirements of the DOC and has been bottled in the region. Wines must then undergo a tasting by the Ministry of Agriculture before being sealed for sale. This additional level guarantees the wine is what the label says and was brought about by criminals labelling cheap and poor-quality wines as DOC. While this practice has virtually been eliminated, the DOCG status remains to protect the best DOC wines of Italy.
