The Côte D’Or is divided into two sections that contain some of the most famous villages in the wine world. The villages are usually located on the lower slopes of the region with easier access to transport links and water. Many of the best wines come from the Côte de Nuits in the northern part of the region. AOC law means that wines are labelled first by domaine (e.g. Richebourg) then village Vosne-Romanée), then sub region (Côte de Nuits) then main region (Burgundy/Bourgogne).
