Pests – Phylloxera

Phylloxera vastatrix, or “the devastator,” is one of the most notorious vineyard pests. This tiny yellow aphid, native to North America, feeds on vine roots, creating wounds that invite infections and lead to vine decline and death.

Key Facts:

  • First recorded in Europe in 1863, causing widespread devastation.
  • Vitis vinifera is highly susceptible, whereas native American rootstocks exhibit resistance.
  • Most vineyards today use grafted rootstocks for protection.
  • Regions with sandy soils (e.g., parts of Australia, Chile, and Argentina) are less affected.
