This 3 days course designed by SASA prepares students for the official South African Sommelier Association (SASA) Junior Sommelier (Level 1) Certification. The course covers elements of wine service that are expected to be handled comfortably by any hospitality professional in their role to international standards, it is the natural progression for a Wine Ambassador wishing to develop his/her skills.
Sommeliers Academy Level 3 Wine, WSET level 2 or CWA Certificate with a good knowledge of international wines is required plus a good knowledge of the hospitality environment (these are minimum levels and it must indicate that the student must learn on their own from other open sources as well). Applicants should also have a minimum two years’ experience as a wine waiter in the hospitality industry, or similar, to have the required practical service skills.
After three days of intense training, with additional practice in their workplace, students will be put forward for examination by SASA. SASA is recognised by the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI).
SASA Junior Sommelier exam is in two parts aligned to the material within the course: A theory examination with multiple choice questions covering candidate’s existing wine knowledge together with wine service skills covered in the course. The second part of the exam is a practical dining room scenario where the students will demonstrate their ability to handle table setup, wine service and communicate accurately with any guest in a hospitality context. Pass mark is 60% on each module. SASA Junior Sommelier Certification is the path toward becoming a SASA Certified Sommelier Level 2 and ASI International Sommelier Diploma.
