Romania – key wine regions

With wine regions in Romania still evolving, and specific appellations are largely undefined with most wines produced in broader PGI regions. Typically, white wines are typically made in the northern regions of Crisana, Maramures Transylvania and Moldova with red wines from Banat, Muntenia, Oltenia and Debrogea. Excluding local varieties, which are made in a wide variety of quality levels, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are a large percentage of plantings to the west with Pinot Noir proving successful to the east of Bucharest and the region of Debrogea.
