Austria – wine laws 2

Austrian wine also includes three categories within the DAC rules similar to the French vineyard rating system of Grand Cru or Premier Cru. These quality levels can be applied to all qualifying Qualitätswein and Prädikatswein grown within a DAC region and to regional DAC rules. Gebietswein indicates the grapes were grown in vineyards across the region and are should be of exceptional quality and reflect the character of the region. Orstwein are made from grapes from a single village or local area and reflect the terroir of their specific site. Riedenwein are made from grapes grown in a single vineyard and are generally the most complex and interesting wines.
