Climates of Italy

The climates of Italy are defined by altitude rather than latitude. The Alps to the north provide a cooler climate for crisp and aromatic white wines while the Apennine Mountain range that runs length of the country provides altitude. Vineyards in the south can be as high as 600 metres having a considerable cooling effect compared to the low-lying coastal areas. Most areas experience low rainfall that’s typical of Mediterranean climates meaning grapes can be harvested late into the year even in the coolest regions.
